Aconite is 15 now!

23 Sep 2025

Our company recently celebrated its 15th birthday! We couldn't have been more proud and happy. It's remarkable how quickly time has flown, yet and paradoxically, it has been 15 long years of unwavering perseverance, unconditional commitment, and a deep love for the work we do. This passion and dedication to creating challenging yet impactful feature documentaries is precisely what drives us.

In many cultures, a 15th birthday symbolises a coming of age. Similarly, our growth has involved learning quickly, and from an early age, how to navigate a challenging and ever-changing industry. Staying loyal and clear in our intention to produce creative, international films in collaboration with wonderful partners has been essential to our survival. At Aconite, we've built a team that values and remains dedicated to making unique films by distinct, exceptional filmmakers whose voices and work will stand the test of time. It is about leaving a legacy that continues to captivate audiences for years to come. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported us along the way; you know who you are, and we are indebted to your kindness and generosity.

We received a very special birthday gift with 'The Boy and The Suit of Lights'  becoming the first documentary to open the Filmhouse’s Doc Screen this July- an initiative in partnership with the Scottish Documentary Institute to bring independent feature documentaries into the cinema. This iconic Edinburgh cinema, forced to close in 2022, happily reopened this summer thanks to a grassroots campaign by cinema lovers and organisations advocating for independent cinema. It was such a pleasure and incredibly exciting to see so many people attending the screening of Inma De Reyes’s award-winning film.  Interestingly, 'The Boy and the Suit of Lights' is a coming-of-age story. It depicts Borja, a young boy growing up in Castellon, Spain, who struggles to define his identity and find opportunities in a place where underprivileged kids, like him, often feel trapped with limited choices and hope for a better future. Please keep an eye out for further screenings of this special film and its UK cinema release this Autumn.

We are, of course, aware of the challenges facing our industry and the ongoing discussions around the struggle to distribute our independent films. While we don't turn a blind eye to any problems and are committed to making our independent businesses sustainable, our commitment to supporting independent, author-led international documentaries remains the driving force behind our business.

Please keep  an eye out for future news on our upcoming projects, which include: 'Interspecies', directed by two-time Oscar-nominated Lucy Walker (a co-production with Decia Films, known for Wim Wenders' 'The Salt of The Earth' and 'Pope Francis: A Man Of His Words'); 'The Mad World Of Harvey Kurtzman' by award-winning filmmaker Bart Simpson (a co-production with Intuitive Films, the company behind 'Fire Of Love'); and 'Conscious', by award-winning artist and filmmaker Suki Chan. We also have new projects currently in development, with more announcements coming soon.
